Last month we took an in-depth look at how patio furniture can transform your outdoor space in our ultimate guide, so this month we want to dig deeper still and focus on - Ed: maybe my favourite type of set in the Lazy Susan collection - the 2-seater garden bistro set.
Our range is available in a number of different finishes, shapes, table sizes, chair styles, and colours, so we want to look specifically at the things you need to consider before you buy and help those shopping for new to make a more informed purchase.
For us, a bistro set is so much more than just garden furniture or a small garden table and 2 chairs though. They’re a stylish and functional design solution, and they have a fascinating history that makes them unique, which is why they’ve remained popular since the early 1600s!
Traditionally associated with the chic bistros of Paris, something we explore in our history of outdoor bistro sets article, these intimate 2-seater tables were the perfect size for savvy cafe owners looking to offer a spot outside, whereby people could enjoy the sunshine and share a bite to eat or a bottle of wine together.
And we think that is why they also translate so well onto our own outdoor spaces... They’ve been one of the best-sellers here at Lazy Susan since we started and they continue to be a popular addition to our bundle deals when people are purchasing larger sets and looking to coordinate.
They’re perfect for small gardens, patios, balconies or deck areas, and they can be used to create an intimate dining/seating zone in larger gardens.
Perfectly sized for two people, our wide range of bistro sets are ideal for relaxing outdoors. Whether it’s brunch with a friend, or a relaxing glass of wine after work with your partner, we have a comprehensive range of small 2-seater sets.
You can choose from a selection of classic and contemporary styles from our popular Mia with its intricate woven metalwork, to the elegant London Rose with a bold floral motif, or the sophisticated Anna with its interwoven diamond edging.
All of our tables are available in our durable antique bronze, slate grey and white painted finishes, and we offer a range of accessories such as our water-resistant Cushions that can be purchased with the set at a discounted price.
We want this article to be a one-stop shop for all things bistro, so we're answering the following:

Why buy a bistro set?
Bistro sets were traditionally constructed from wrought iron but now come in a range of modern low-maintenance materials such as our cast aluminium bistro set range.
They are the perfect solution for those looking to create a stylish dining space within a smaller zoned section of your garden (as shown in the photo above of our slate grey Catherine 8-Seater Set paired with a Tulip Bistro Set and 2 x upgraded Kate Chairs) or where space is limited such as on a balcony or small backyard plot.
What they lack in size, they more than make up in versatility and functionality. They are practical, portable, great for intimate socialising, look stylish, and have a host of advantages over their larger seating siblings:
-
Bistro sets are perfect for small spaces
If your outdoor space is limited, a garden bistro set is a great solution for small spaces, such as balconies, patios, and decks. Compact and lightweight, they have a small footprint and are easy to pick up and move around if you want to position them in a sunny spot or pop away and store them to keep them clean or during bad weather. -
A bistro table is ideal for intimate outdoor dining
A bistro set with a table with two chairs is the perfect solution for sharing drinks and dining for two. The small size of the table creates a cosy and inviting atmosphere. Bistro tables are perfect for outdoor dining. -
Bistro sets are versatile and functional
As well as being perfect for enjoying a meal with a friend or loved one, bistro tables can also be used for a variety of other purposes, including morning coffee, evening drinks, working, or relaxing. They’re a versatile addition to any outdoor space and due to their size and weight a great option if you want to move them around a larger space to make the most of the sunshine. -
A 2-seater bistro set is an affordable option
A bistro set is also a great option for those on a budget or not looking to invest in a large big-ticket set. They are relatively affordable, so they’re a great option for budget-savvy shoppers.
We look a little closer at why functionality and style are the blueprint for our collection in our combine functionality and style with a metal bistro set article.
Why buy a bistro set from Lazy Susan?
If you are looking for a small, stylish, and affordable table for your patio, balcony or deck, then a bistro set from Lazy Susan is a great option and ticks all of those points raised above and a few more.
Here are some of the benefits of owning one of our metal garden bistro table sets:
-
They are perfect for small spaces
Our bistro sets are compact and lightweight, making them easy to pick up move around and store. Ideal for small patios, decks, and balconies, they’re designed to be compact and space-saving. Our ultra-compact Alessia set (pictured above), for example, is foldable for easy storage and has a table with a diameter of only 60 cm. With chairs that will all fit in around 1 square metre (1m2) of space or 4 x 50 cm x 50 cm paving slabs. -
They are high-quality and durable
At Lazy Susan we are synonymous with high-grade cast aluminium furniture. All our bistro sets are made from the same sturdy metal as our larger dining-style sets to ensure long-lasting durability and weather resistance. The metal is painted with a protective finish that further protects the metal from the elements and general wear and tear. The exception is the aforementioned Alessia, which is the only set in our range to be constructed from Stainless Steel to make it even lighter and easier to carry. -
They are stylish and elegant
Our range of bistro tables comes in a variety of styles to match any décor. They can add a touch of sophistication to your outdoor space and many feature our trademark latticework. We sand cast all our aluminium to create classical styles that will never date or go out of style. -
They are durable and weatherproof
Our bistro tables are constructed from high-grade sand-cast aluminium that we selected due to its ability to withstand the elements better than any other material. This means you can leave them outside all year round, even in harsh weather conditions. They are the perfect option if you live in the UK. -
They are easy to maintain
Our bistro sets are designed for outdoor use, and they are built to withstand the elements. However, anything left outside will get dirty. Fortunately, our painted finish requires no maintenance and it is designed to be both water and UV-resistant. Removing any dirt and grime is quick and easy, you simply wipe them down with warm soapy water and a soft cloth and leave them to dry. -
They are affordable
Our bistro tables offer great value for the money. You can find them at a variety of price points to suit your budget. If you are looking for a stylish, durable, and affordable way to add seating to your patio or deck, a patio bistro table is a great option. Our range starts at around £100 for our modern folding Alessia sets and around £200 for our classically styled sets such as our London Rose. With our many promos, you will often find them under that price point too. -
They coordinate with our full range
All our bistro tables and chairs are constructed from the same weatherproof cast aluminium as the rest of the Lazy Susan range. Popular with many of our customers are purchasing a larger 8 or 6-seater set for the main patio and then positioning a coordinating bistro set in another part of the garden to create different seating zones. If you purchased our best-selling June for example, at checkout you can add our Tulip Bistro Set as a special offer and save up to 40%! -
They are comfortable
When choosing a new bistro set, it is important to consider comfort. If outdoor space is limited then you want a set that is versatile with chairs you can sit on and enjoy. If you do plan on spending a lot of time on them, then we would advise you to add our cushions to your bistro set order and you could even upgrade to our wider Kate chair option to save up to 30% off as part of our bundle deals. -
They are functional
What our bistro tables lack in size and seats they more than make up in style, functionality and versatility. We recently explored how you can enjoy a meal for two on a patio bistro set and in that, we stated that our range of garden bistros features tabletops from 50 cm to 90 cm in diameter and that is more than enough space to enjoy a morning coffee or afternoon tea, an evening meal or a few evening drinks on your patio, terrace or balcony. -
They provide excellent value for money
We mentioned it above but a Lazy Susan bistro set delivers excellent value for money. You get a quality 2-seater outdoor table at an affordable price. While the initial investment may be higher compared to other lesser material-quality options, the durability and longevity of our sets make them a more cost-effective choice in the long run as they won’t need replacing or a high level of maintenance to keep them weatherproof. -

How do you buy the right size bistro set?
Our bistro sets, whilst all compact and 2-seater by design, still come in a variety of tabletop sizes and shapes, so it's important to measure the space you have available before you start shopping.
If outdoor space is limited then size becomes a critical factor and it is vital you get a set that best fits in the free outdoor space available.
Too big and the space won’t function and flow, too small and a bistro set could look lost. Before you buy it is essential you carefully measure and establish what size bistro set will best fit:
How to measure your outdoor space for a bistro
The first step is to measure the space where you want to put your bistro set. This will help you determine the size of the set you need.
Use a tape measure to get accurate measurements and if you can’t lock it in place get somebody to help hold it in place so you can take an accurate reading.
Be sure to measure in centimetres, not inches as that is the unit of measurement we use in our shop and on all technical literature, instructions and diagrams.
Measure twice to make sure your figures are correct and then measure again if need be.
If you're not sure what size table you need, please don’t hesitate to contact our Customer Service team and ask for their professional opinion.
As a general rule, we advise that you leave between 50 cm and 75 cm around the table to position the chairs and then a further 50 cm to 75 cm for what we call working space (shown in the diagram below).
This will then give you the room you need to pull out to sit comfortably at the table, pull the chairs in and out, and then still have room to move around the table safely and comfortably.
If we take our largest bistro table, Anna, as an example, it has an 80 cm diameter tabletop (as shown in the illustration below).
Add onto that 50 - 75 cm for the chairs and 50 - 75 cm of working space and you need around 180 cm to 230 cm diameter of space for that table to fit and still function.
Of course, these figures are a guide only, every patio, balcony, etc. is different so you might be able to work with less, just be sure to carefully measure and assess the space.
For example, as all bistro sets are 2-seater, it could be you position the set against a wall or the edge of a balcony so that automatically reduces the amount of working and chair space on one side.
If unsure just from measuring, take the dimensions for the bistro set from our shop and mark it out with some washable pavement chalk on your patio or cut up some old bits of cardboard to see how it will fit and flow when in situ.
The dimensions and required floor space for our bistro collection are shown in the table below:
If you need any further assistance, please don’t hesitate to contact our Customer Service Team. Alternatively, our how to buy the right 2-seater bistro set from Lazy Susan article has some great tips on measuring, scale, traffic flow and style.
How do you buy the right style bistro set?
Bistro sets come in a variety of styles, and whilst it is more subjective than size, for those unsure we would always advise you to opt for one that complements the décor of your home and garden.
If you have a traditional home, you might want to choose a set such as our classically styled Ella (shown in the photo above) with its compact 60cm round tabletop with our trademark expanding lattice and diamond border.
If you have a more modern home, then you might prefer a set our contemporary folding Alessia set with its simple yet elegant styling (shown below).
To establish what style will work best in your outdoor space, assess the following criteria:
-
Assess your space
Look carefully at where you want to place the bistro set and measure the free space. Factor in other items on your patio, balcony, or deck such as planters, steps, etc. Look at how you use the space and how people access and move around it. This will help you determine the appropriate size and shape of the table and chairs. -
Define your style
Decide on the overall style or theme you want to achieve with your bistro set. Consider the existing décor and ambience of your home and the wider outdoor space. Determine if you prefer a classic, modern, rustic, or laid-back style, and look for sets that best fit with how you use the space and will best complement. -
Think about comfort and functionality
Don’t forget the aforementioned comfort and functionality of the bistro set. You want it to look good but you want a good quality table and chairs that you will use. Look for chairs with ergonomic backs and seats and add cushions for all-day comfort. -
Check for durability
Whilst a bistro set is more affordable than a larger patio set, you still want it to be constructed from a material that is durable and weatherproof. Check if the materials are weather-resistant, rust-proof, fade-resistant, and sturdy enough to last outside so that your investment lasts longer. -
Read reviews and compare prices
Before making a purchase, read customer reviews to gain a clear insight into the quality, durability, and comfort of different bistro sets. Compare prices from different retailers to ensure you get the best value for your money. Check for discounts and promotions to get the best deal. -
Order samples when shopping online
As is the case with Lazy Susan, in the absence of a physical store ask to see samples to assess the finish and quality. Carefully read product descriptions, view high-resolution images such as those in our customer photo gallery (in our opinion, the best way to get a feel of what it could look like in your own space), and always check for a clear returns policy.

Metal vs. wood bistro sets: Which is best?
As we’ve mentioned earlier, bistro sets are made from a variety of materials in the UK, including wood, metal, and plastic.
Wood is a classic choice that provides a natural and inviting feel. Metal on the other hand is durable and weatherproof. Each material has its pros and cons.
Ultimately, your choice will depend on personal preference and the desired style or look you’re going for in your outdoor space.
Some people genuinely prefer the natural look and feel of wood and they’re happy to invest the extra time and effort into maintaining the finish to protect it from the elements.
However, we would simply ask you to consider a cast aluminium bistro set before you buy:
-
Cast aluminium bistros are durable
Cast aluminium is perfectly suited to the UK climate as it is generally more durable and long-lasting when compared to wood and resin sets. It can withstand different weather elements such as rain, sun, and snow without warping, fading or cracking. -
Cast aluminium bistros are low-maintenance
A cast aluminium bistro will require significantly less maintenance than wood. It is easier to clean, and you don't have to worry about issues like repainting, staining, or rot. -
Cast aluminium bistros are a modern classic
Metal bistro sets often have a sleek and modern design that can complement contemporary patio styles. They can give a more polished and sophisticated look to the outdoor space. -
Cast aluminium bistros are lightweight and easy to move
Metal furniture is typically lighter in weight than hardwoods, making it easier to move around the patio if needed. This can be beneficial if you like to rearrange your outdoor furniture regularly or if you have limited storage space. -
Cast aluminium bistro sets are robust
However, whilst it is light enough to pick up and move, it is not as light as resin plastic pieces that are susceptible to blowing over. Striking a middle ground they feel of substantial quality but not so heavy you can’t move them like the better quality timbers or iron and not as flimsy as resin. -
Cast aluminium bistros are rust, rot, pest and weather-resistant
Unlike wooden furniture, metal bistro sets will not attract pests like termites or wood-boring insects, which can become a real problem over time.
Can you use a bistro table indoors?
This isn’t something we get asked a lot but yes, you can use our garden bistro tables indoors if you so wish.
In fact, many people will use them as a bridge between the inside and outside in indoor/outdoor kitchen areas as they are compact and lightweight, making them easy to move around or store, and it is perfect for blurring the lines between the two spaces.
Our sets are made from a material that is weatherproof and designed for outdoor use, so they’re certainly more durable than a table that is designed for indoor use only.
Just like you would if shopping for an outdoor space, choose a table that is the right size for the space you have available. You don't want it to be too big or too small.
Choose a table that matches the décor of your home or the theme you’re trying to create. You don't want it to clash with the rest of your furniture.
To make the bistro feel more open and inviting, add some cushions or pillows to the chairs to make them more comfortable and accessories the table with candles, flowers, or other decor items to add a touch of your personality.
With a little planning, you can easily incorporate a garden bistro set from Lazy Susan into your outdoor or indoor space.
How do you buy the right colour bistro set?
Colour is very much a case of personal preference when selecting the right colour bistro set. We generally like what we like.
It is very much a case of choosing a colour that you love and that complements the prevalent style in your home and garden.
That said, there are a few basic pointers we can give you if you’re unsure, so consider the following steps:
-
Research the latest colour trends and styles
Explore the latest design trends and popular colour options for bistro sets. Look at interior design websites, style magazines, or social media platforms for some inspiration. A quick search on a platform like Instagram of #bistrostyle will bring up a plethora of inspiration. This can give you an idea of what colours are popular and how they might work in your space. We tend to keep the colours in our collection quite neutral, and that way they’re less likely to go out of style. We will then look to introduce the latest colours into our gardens with the planting, soft furnishings, decor, etc. That way it is cheaper to switch up and refresh rather than having some out-of-style bistro set. -
Test colour samples with our sample kits
If possible, obtain colour samples or swatches of the bistro set options you are thinking of buying. You can then compare them in your outdoor space and see which ones best match the colours already there and see how they look at different times of the day. We provide free sample packs to show our metal and fabric colours and finish. You can take these and along with our customer photos build up a clear picture of how each colour in our collection will appear in your own garden and make an informed decision. -
Ask us
If you are still uncertain about which colour to choose, then ask around/ Speak to family and friends. Ask an expert such as a garden designer or interior designer. Anyone who can provide you with a fresh perspective or suggest colour options you may not have considered. If you’re looking at our range and unsure if antique bronze, slate grey or a white bistro set is best, then please drop us an email with a photo of your outdoor space and the team will be happy to give you our professional opinion.
How do you style and accessorise your garden bistro?
Style, much like colour, is again often all down to personal taste.
If you’ve recently purchased a new build, then your garden might be a blank canvas, in which case you’ve got a little freedom to choose.
If, and more likely, you’re adding to an existing garden, then you’re looking for planting, decor, centrepiece, soft furnishings, accessories, etc. that will complement and enhance the set. Make it part of the wider design scheme.
The key, much like with colour, is to pick styling elements that you like. Something that will not only make the bistro itself look better but also help or encourage you to get outside and enjoy the furniture.
We tend to find that our collection works great when it is styled with the following looks or themes but these are just suggestions or inspo rather than hard and fast design rules:
French-inspired bistro
They originated in Paris so it makes sense to embrace that classic bistro feel. Pair with a gingham checked tablecloth in traditional French colours like red or blue. Add a small vase with fresh flowers or some potted herbs in the middle of the table. Add a touch of elegance with white plates and silver cutlery.
Rustic bistro charm
Alternatively, if you want to keep things a little more relaxed, then opt for a more rustic and cosy look. Decorate your bistro table with burlap placemats or a linen tablecloth for a farmhouse feel. Place a small galvanised metal bucket with wildflowers as your centrepiece. Add some mismatched vintage plates and Mason jar glasses for some seriously laid-back boho vibes.
Modern bistro chic
This look works particularly well on our slate great bistros, and it gives you a sleeker more contemporary finish. Keep the table simple and pair it with a solid pop of colour with a bright tablecloth or placemats. Decorate the table with a modern-shaped vase and a single flower or a striking succulent as your centrepiece. Choose modern plates and glasses with clean lines and stylish modern cutlery.
Outdoor bistro oasis
Your bistro is outdoors so build on that theme and create an inviting outdoor oasis by pairing natural elements. Skip the tablecloth and let the beauty of the table intricate metalwork on our tables shine through. Decorate the space e with a string of festoon lights or add a lantern to the centre of your table to create a warm ambiance. Pair with a fire-it for when the sun sets and surround yourself with potted plants and herbs to add greenery and a wonderful aroma.
Romantic bistro ambience
We discussed this concept in our how to create an intimate outdoor space with a garden bistro article. You can bring a touch of romance, by draping your chairs in soft blankets or covering the table with a delicate tablecloth. Screen the area for privacy and use scented candles in different heights and sizes for the centrepiece. Use delicate, vintage-inspired china with floral patterns and distressed or matte gold flatware to complete the romantic look.
How do you use a bistro set as a focal point?
All of the above styles or looks are perfect for bringing a focal point to your garden and that is important for a number of reasons
-
Focus
It can draw the eye and create a sense of destination. When you enter a patio area, garden or balcony with a well-placed focal point, your eyes are immediately drawn to it. This helps to create a sense of excitement and anticipation, and it encourages you to explore the rest of the outdoor space and spend time sitting at your bistro. -
Balance
A bistro table will also bring a sense of harmony, by balancing out all the different elements such as plants, hardscaping, and water features. -
Personality
A bistro will add interest and personality to your outdoor space and is a unique way to express your personal style and interest. It can also be used to highlight the unique features of your patio. -
Scale
It can help to make a small garden seem larger. A well-placed bistro can create the illusion of depth and make the space seem more spacious and inviting.
The best way to achieve the above is to:
-
Place the bistro set in a central location
This will draw the eye to the table and create a natural gathering space. -
Use your bistro table to display a statement piece
This could be a vase of flowers, a sculpture, a lantern, or a piece of garden art. -
Pair it with coordinating chairs
This will create a visual impact and make the table set stand out. -
Use brightly coloured or patterned tablecloths
This is a great way to add interest and stamp your personality on the space. -
Add lighting and heating
A lantern, candles or festoon lights on or around the table will create a warm and inviting atmosphere.
Remember to consider the overall theme and ambience you want to create when styling your bistro table. Don’t be afraid to experiment with colours, patterns, and textures. Add decorative accents to make it truly reflect your personal taste and sense of style. For us, the only rule when it comes to style, is there are no rules!
How do you assemble our garden bistro sets?
We supply our furniture as Ready-To-Assemnle (RTA) but it is quick and easy to build. This not only keeps the shipping costs down it also prevents damage in transit as parts can be more securely packed than a built-up table or chair.
To construct, start by unpacking and laying out all the parts on a soft surface such as a blanket or the large boxes we ship our furniture in to prevent damage, especially if building outside.
Gather all the necessary fixings, tools, and parts and start by assembling as per the instructions provided. If need be you will also find downloadable PDF copies on the product pages of our website.
Start by attaching the legs to the tabletop using the bolts provided but only finger tighten until all legs are in place, level and flush.
In the instructions, you will often see a crossed-through spanner symbol, and this means simply that, at this stage of assembly, you need only loosely tighten the bolts in the diagram.
Later in the assembly process, when further sections are attached, you will be prompted to tighten them up using the spanner provided. This is particularly important when attaching legs to the underside as it will allow you to get them in the correct position.
On some items, such as chairs, you may also find that certain nuts and bolts have already been attached to the individual parts, for your convenience. This is mainly found on the bottom of our chairs. All other fixings are provided for you in a separate bag.
Use a spirit level to make sure that the table frame and each chair are level. We also supply screw-in plastic feet for all chair and table legs. These not only protect the metal from rough surfaces but also provide a little adjustment on an uneven patio (no beer mats needed).
Make sure that all of the screws and bolts are tightened securely once you’re happy everything is lining up correctly. The video above takes you through the construction of our Ivy Bistro Set and the basic steps apply to most sets in our range.
If you have any questions about assembly, our team are always happy to help, so, please don't hesitate to call us on 01243 68 47 48 or email us via our Contact Form.

Our cast aluminium bistro sets will provide a durable, low-maintenance, and stylish outdoor seating option that will live at the heart of your garden and provide years of enjoyment.
They are durable, low-maintenance, lightweight, stylish and long-lasting sets that are designed for UK gardens. We offer competitive pricing, which means you can get a high-quality outdoor furniture set without breaking the bank.
The advantages of a 2-seater bistro over other sets are their compact footprint, intimacy, versatility, and affordability. Our collection delivers a cosy and convenient outdoor seating option, especially for those with limited space.
A bistro's compactness means it takes up significantly less space compared to dining-style or sofa-style sets. This is particularly beneficial for balconies or small gardens with limited space.
They allow for a much more intimate dining or relaxation experience, so they’re perfect for couples, best friends, or small families who want to enjoy each other's company without feeling too spread out.
Due to their smaller size, our range of bistro tables can be easily moved and repositioned as per your preference. This allows you to create different seating arrangements and utilise the table for various purposes, such as a workspace or a reading nook, or move into the shade if the sun gets a little too hot.
They create a cosy and inviting atmosphere that will encourage intimate conversations and a sense of togetherness, making it an ideal choice for enjoying a cup of coffee before work or sharing a meal with a loved one when you get home.
If you are working to a budget, then they will deliver all the bang of a £1000 6 seater set for a fraction of the bucks. OK, you can’t seat as many guests, but for 2 people what more do you need?
Plus, with fewer seats and a smaller table area, a bistro set requires less maintenance and cleaning than our larger tables. They’re easier to wipe down, keep tidy, maintain their overall appearance, and store if there are any yellow or amber weather warnings.
We regularly run competitions and promotions on our range, so sign up for our newsletter below or give us a follow on our social media channels.
